How do I know if I need professional help?

I have written out some questions for you to answer. Answer these eight questions yes or no, as honestly as you can and you will have a pretty good idea if counseling would be right for you.

  1. I feel happy at least half of the time. Yes ____ No____
  2. In general, I feel that those around me understand me. Yes ___ No____
  3. I know why I get angry most of the time. Yes ___ No ___
  4. I am looking forward to a number of things in my life. Yes ___ No ____
  5. I feel connected to people. Yes ____ No ____
  6. I feel as if I am successful more that 50% of my life. Yes ____ No ___
  7. I only have a few regrets about my life. Yes ____ No ____
  8. There are a number of things in my life that I enjoy. Yes ___ No ____

If you have truthfully answered "no" to four or more questions you might want to consider talking to a professional therapist or counselor. Another reason that a therapist would be indicated is if you have an intense response to any of these questions. For example, if you have no idea why you get angry or if you rarely feel happy these are also good reasons to talk to someone who is in a position to guide you. Someone who is trained and experienced in helping you live a worthwhile quality of life.
